Auburn Hires Hugh Freeze as New Head Football Coach
A Move with Upside and Risk
Auburn University has hired Hugh Freeze as its next head football coach. The move comes with both upside on the field and the risk of embarrassment off it. Freeze, born September 27, 1969, has a history of success as a head coach at the college level, but he also has been involved in several off-field controversies.
Upside on the Field
Freeze is a proven winner on the field. He led Ole Miss to a 39-25 record in five seasons, including three bowl appearances. He also had success at Arkansas State, where he went 10-2 in his only season there.
Auburn believes that Freeze can bring the same success to the Plains. The Tigers have struggled in recent years, going 6-7 in each of the past two seasons. Freeze is hoping to turn things around and make Auburn a contender in the SEC West.
Risk of Embarrassment
However, Freeze's hiring also comes with some risk. In 2017, he was fired by Ole Miss after an investigation found that he had made numerous phone calls to escort services while he was the head coach. Freeze admitted to the calls and apologized for his behavior.
Auburn is hoping that Freeze has learned from his past mistakes. However, there is always the risk that he could get into trouble again. If he does, it could damage Auburn's reputation and hurt the football program.
Looking Ahead
Freeze is scheduled to be introduced as Auburn's head coach on Monday. He will have a lot of work to do to turn around the Auburn football program. But he is also a talented coach with a lot of experience. If he can stay out of trouble off the field, he could lead Auburn to success on the field.
