Geography and Location

Boone is a town located in the mountains of western North Carolina, at an elevation of 2,825 feet above sea level. It is nestled on a tributary of the Cane River, just north of the Black Mountains. The town is surrounded by several small hamlets, including Brownsville, which is located about forty miles from Boone.

Diana Gabaldon's Inspiration

Boone is also the inspiration for the fictional town of Frasers Ridge in Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" book series. Gabaldon has said that Frasers Ridge is likely located within ten miles of Boone or Blowing Rock, North Carolina, although the exact location is not known.

History and Development

Boone was founded in 1770 and was originally known as Rowan County. In 1799, the county was divided into two counties, with Rowan County being the westernmost. Boone was named after Daniel Boone, the famous frontiersman and explorer.
