Soliciting Comments through October 5 2023 on Experimental Storm Prediction Center SPC Day 1 Convective Outlook with Severe
NOAA and partners are soliciting comments on a proposed experimental upgrade to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Day 1 Convective Outlook with severe weather information.
The SPC is soliciting comments through October 5, 2023, on a proposed experimental upgrade to its Day 1 Convective Outlook product. The proposed upgrade would add severe weather information to the outlook, including the probability of tornadoes, hail, and wind gusts. This information would be in addition to the existing probability of thunderstorms and excessive rainfall that is currently included in the outlook.
This information would be derived from research-based guidance from the National Severe Storms Laboratory and would provide forecasters with more information for making decisions on severe weather warnings.
This is a collaborative effort that will help enhance the services provided for the nation in severe weather preparedness and decision-making.
The proposed upgrade is part of a larger effort by NOAA and its partners to improve the nation's severe weather forecasting capabilities. This effort includes the development of new observing systems, such as the GOES-R series of satellites, and the implementation of new forecast models.
The SPC is seeking comments from the public, including meteorologists, emergency managers, and members of the general public, on the proposed upgrade. Comments can be submitted through the Federal eRulemaking Portal.
Comments may be submitted through October 5, 2023, through the Federal eRulemaking Portal
The SPC is also hosting a webinar on the proposed upgrade on September 20, 2023, at 11:00 AM CST. The webinar will provide an overview of the proposed upgrade and give participants an opportunity to ask questions.
More information about the proposed upgrade is available on the SPC website.
The SPC is a national center for forecasting severe weather. The center issues outlooks, watches, and warnings for tornadoes, hail, and wind gusts. The SPC also conducts research on severe weather and develops new forecast tools.
